What’s Happening On This Australian Beach Looks Absolutely Alien. It’s Not, Right?

One of the worst feelings in the world is walking down a beautiful, sandy beach and then suddenly stepping on something sharp or squishy (gross). Lots of creatures live near or in the ocean, and sometimes you get a nasty surprise. But what would you do if you saw an army of green globs wash ashore on your local beach? You’d probably freak out, wouldn’t you?

When these strange spheres appeared one day, t people of Dee Why, Australia, did a little research before sending the entire world into a panic. These creepy-looking creatures spotted on the sand are not aliens, but marimo, a type of algae. Yes, they’re living beings, and they’re nothing to worry about. Just ask the people of Japan and Scotland, where marimo washed up on their shores in the past. Some, in fact, keep the marimo as pets. Take a look!

Marimo typically grow on rocks, but sometimes waves knock them off of the hard surface.

As the waves continue to push them about, they usually become rounded like a ball.

“Marimo” is actually Japanese for “bouncy plant.”

They might not make very exciting plants, but since all they need is sunlight and water for survival, you can’t beat how easy it is to care for them.

(via Pikchur)

Wow. What an interesting thing. That ocean is just full of mysteries, isn’t it? While I’ll admit they don’t seem like aliens, I don’t know if I’ll be taking one in as a pet anytime soon. (Actually, I guess they are pretty cute. We’ll see!)

Kirstie Alley: Eastwood’s speech ‘funny as hell’; actress won’t toe lefty line!/kirstiealley/status/241571901091217409

The feisty actress will be appearing this fall on “Dancing with the Stars: All Stars,” and, well, it turns out she might have a few things in common with co-star Bristol Palin. Alley, a self-described Democrat, took to Twitter today to — gasp! — call out the lapdog media and to encourage people to take responsibility for “muddling through the B.S.” to “find the truth”:

perhaps..& just a suggestion, we stop voting because of "one " personal interest in "one" issue & look at the overall picture..dumb right?

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

I would like to thank several of you for acknowledging me being: A. bat shit crazy..B. being a Commy…C. being a fucked up mess..HOLLA 😉

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

We can't FEAR other people's views.. we needn't embrace them but we might actually learn doesn't kill us..lack of it can

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

It's OUR responsibility to some how muddle through all the BS and find the truth..BIG job, little time=God help us all..;)

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

@kirstiealley Me too! I fear you'll get hate tweets for not going with the flow with the lefty loonies! Sooo proud of you!

— Shelley Stokes (@sdjstokes) August 31, 2012

Alley did take some heat for her independent thinking:

@kirstiealley watched Clint & thought it was inappropriate. That's not based on liberal media. It's based on what I saw with my own baby blues

— Your Reality Check (@UrRealityCheque) August 31, 2012

Fact checkers? Like Stephanie Cutter, perhaps?

Ah, yes. Death threats. We’d expect nothing less from the misogynistic Left.

Overwhelmingly, though, the responses were supportive:

@kirstiealley thanks for recognizing this! Especially about US media being terribly biased…they SO R!!!

@kirstiealley @jwdoke just because someone is a registered Dem/Repub. doesn't mean they always have to vote for that party. Thinking is good

Rep. Tom Cole ‘strongly opposed’ to housing illegal alien minors at Ft. Sill!/edeverlasting/status/474727065435262976

As Twitchy reported, the White House is dealing with what it calls an “urgent humanitarian situation” — tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma voiced his opposition to the practice of housing these children at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.!/tomcoleok04/status/474721852087336960

In a statement, he writes:

Fort Sill Military Base in Lawton is expected to begin housing at least 600 unaccompanied minors who illegally immigrated to the United States. Since fiscal year 2011, the number of these individuals, usually from Central America, has grown from 6,000 to 66,000 last year. By next year, this number is expected to climb even higher to 127,000.

Usually between 13 and 17 years old, these individuals enter the United States and go into custody of border patrol agents, who cannot release them to detention facilities since they are minors. While no official announcement has yet been made by the Administration, Fort Sill could begin receiving hundreds of illegal juvenile unaccompanied minors as early as June 10th.

Using Fort Sill and other military bases to house illegal immigrants is simply an inappropriate use of military facilities. Moreover, I am concerned that what begins as an emergency measure could, over time, evolve into a permanent juvenile detention center for those who have entered the country illegally. This could result in a confusion of missions at what is the one of America’s premier military installations.

At least some recognize the problem.!/jasoninthehouse/status/474264019260301313
