What’s Happening On This Australian Beach Looks Absolutely Alien. It’s Not, Right?

One of the worst feelings in the world is walking down a beautiful, sandy beach and then suddenly stepping on something sharp or squishy (gross). Lots of creatures live near or in the ocean, and sometimes you get a nasty surprise. But what would you do if you saw an army of green globs wash ashore on your local beach? You’d probably freak out, wouldn’t you?

When these strange spheres appeared one day, t people of Dee Why, Australia, did a little research before sending the entire world into a panic. These creepy-looking creatures spotted on the sand are not aliens, but marimo, a type of algae. Yes, they’re living beings, and they’re nothing to worry about. Just ask the people of Japan and Scotland, where marimo washed up on their shores in the past. Some, in fact, keep the marimo as pets. Take a look!

Marimo typically grow on rocks, but sometimes waves knock them off of the hard surface.

As the waves continue to push them about, they usually become rounded like a ball.

“Marimo” is actually Japanese for “bouncy plant.”

They might not make very exciting plants, but since all they need is sunlight and water for survival, you can’t beat how easy it is to care for them.

(via Pikchur)

Wow. What an interesting thing. That ocean is just full of mysteries, isn’t it? While I’ll admit they don’t seem like aliens, I don’t know if I’ll be taking one in as a pet anytime soon. (Actually, I guess they are pretty cute. We’ll see!)

‘What was she thinking’? Greta Van Susteren not a fan of Jill Abramson’s tattoo

http://twitter.com/#!/NewsKimSegal/status/467276887828733952

There are mistakes. And then there are mistakes. You know, like Jill Abramson reportedly getting the iconic New York Times “T” tattooed on her back before the paper told her to beat feet.

Are we likely to see Greta Van Susteren sporting Fox News ink? Looks like that’s a “hell no”:

http://twitter.com/#!/gretawire/status/467272759580827648

Abramson is a walking Bad Idea Jeans ad. That’s right up there with “Winona Forever.”

Still, it could be worse.

Kirstie Alley: Eastwood’s speech ‘funny as hell’; actress won’t toe lefty line

http://twitter.com/#!/kirstiealley/status/241571901091217409

The feisty actress will be appearing this fall on “Dancing with the Stars: All Stars,” and, well, it turns out she might have a few things in common with co-star Bristol Palin. Alley, a self-described Democrat, took to Twitter today to — gasp! — call out the lapdog media and to encourage people to take responsibility for “muddling through the B.S.” to “find the truth”:

perhaps..& just a suggestion, we stop voting because of "one " personal interest in "one" issue & look at the overall picture..dumb right?

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

I would like to thank several of you for acknowledging me being: A. bat shit crazy..B. being a Commy…C. being a fucked up mess..HOLLA 😉

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

We can't FEAR other people's views.. we needn't embrace them but we might actually learn something..data doesn't kill us..lack of it can

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

It's OUR responsibility to some how muddle through all the BS and find the truth..BIG job, little time=God help us all..;)

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

@kirstiealley Me too! I fear you'll get hate tweets for not going with the flow with the lefty loonies! Sooo proud of you!

— Shelley Stokes (@sdjstokes) August 31, 2012

Alley did take some heat for her independent thinking:

@kirstiealley watched Clint & thought it was inappropriate. That's not based on liberal media. It's based on what I saw with my own baby blues

— Your Reality Check (@UrRealityCheque) August 31, 2012

Fact checkers? Like Stephanie Cutter, perhaps?

https://twitter.com/EsterGoldberg/status/241572717684457472

Ah, yes. Death threats. We’d expect nothing less from the misogynistic Left.

Overwhelmingly, though, the responses were supportive:

@kirstiealley thanks for recognizing this! Especially about US media being terribly biased…they SO R!!!

— Deirdre Maguire (@dbmags03) August 31, 2012

@kirstiealley @jwdoke just because someone is a registered Dem/Repub. doesn't mean they always have to vote for that party. Thinking is good

— Cheryl (@fallingleaves) August 31, 2012

@kirstiealley god forbid someone speak the truth! This country is about diversity & 2 many forget that! Just as 1may have beliefs & expect

— Hockey Mom (@Hockeymom295) August 31, 2012

@kirstiealley I'm neither Rep or Dem, the vote should be based on issues not the candidate's color or religion. I agree learn about both.

— jan koza (@jakoza1) August 31, 2012

@kirstiealley I am a Republican and I would have to say I agree with most of that list.(not sure what the tax you mentioned is….)

@kirstiealley Thank you for having the courage to be honest about media bias. It's awesome to see!

— Holy Moly Christian (@RangerStalked) August 31, 2012

@kirstiealley @jwdoke I'm not a Republican or a Democrat… I'm an American and I approve this message…

— Rick Stanley (@RickAtNyte) August 31, 2012

So, what’s Alley looking for in a political party?

Here R a few things I want..low Medical insurance, consumption tax, no deficit, MORE jobs, less Welfare, MORE charity, LESS government.

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

Hmmm … more jobs, less welfare, and less government?

https://twitter.com/AnnNY2IL/status/241589204444930049

@kirstiealley That sounds like a Republican not a Democrat! 😉

— Lindsey Marie Ladner (@That90sKidTV) August 31, 2012

That reads like the GOP economic manifesto Ms. @kirstiealley. We aren't so bad, no matter what your Hollywood friends say.

— T.S. Erik (@T_S_Erik) August 31, 2012

To quote @Gov_Martinez "I'll be damned, we're Republicans" RT @TabithaHale: Dear @kirstiealley: I don't think you're a Democrat anymore. 😉

Dear @kirstiealley: I don't think you're a Democrat anymore. 😉

— Tabitha Hale (@TabithaHale) August 31, 2012

Jon Lovitz has been learning to embrace his inner conservative. Can Alley be far behind?

@jwdoke: @kirstiealley Are you *SURE* you're a Democrat??!?” lol…I'm a bit of a hybrid…probably,in truth, I'm more of an Independent

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

I would have voted for Ron Paul.. fire at will…;)

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) August 31, 2012

Well, nobody’s perfect. Hehe.

‘Founding Founders’? White House creates gender neutral birth of a nation

http://twitter.com/#!/whitneypitcher/status/345315096593051649

Neither do we, but nevertheless, the White House announced that the papers of the “Founding Fathers Founders” are now available online, more than likely heavily redacted:

http://twitter.com/#!/sistertoldjah/status/345325853854535680

Founding Founders? Tweeters tried to figure it out:

http://twitter.com/#!/IMAO_/status/345313751437819905
http://twitter.com/#!/RennaW/status/345313549108785152

Which leads us to an annual ritual this weekend when we pay tribute a particular parent, not to imply one is more important than the other:

http://twitter.com/#!/SpeakWithAuthor/status/345325513830703104

Great minds mock alike.

Update:

It didn’t take long for the White House to fix the heading, and surprisingly, it now reads “Founding Fathers.” How long before they “fix” that?

Slam dunk? Obama admin. deals with questions about certainty of Syrian WMD

http://twitter.com/#!/nielslesniewski/status/372079367213420545

There were many feelings of déjà vu after Secretary of State John Kerry made a statement regarding his certainty about Syria’s possession and use of WMDs.

Kerry was echoed by Obama press secretary Jay Carney:

http://twitter.com/#!/markknoller/status/372082152503918593

Will that be enough to satisfy those often skeptical of such claims?

http://twitter.com/#!/RBPundit/status/372081904586997760

We’ll see.

Dennis Miller and others are wondering why some of the same people who called on Bush to wait out multiple U.N. inspections in Iraq before taking action (after getting congressional approval) aren’t doing the same thing this time:

Rep. Tom Cole ‘strongly opposed’ to housing illegal alien minors at Ft. Sill

http://twitter.com/#!/edeverlasting/status/474727065435262976

As Twitchy reported, the White House is dealing with what it calls an “urgent humanitarian situation” — tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma voiced his opposition to the practice of housing these children at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.

http://twitter.com/#!/tomcoleok04/status/474721852087336960

In a statement, he writes:

Fort Sill Military Base in Lawton is expected to begin housing at least 600 unaccompanied minors who illegally immigrated to the United States. Since fiscal year 2011, the number of these individuals, usually from Central America, has grown from 6,000 to 66,000 last year. By next year, this number is expected to climb even higher to 127,000.

Usually between 13 and 17 years old, these individuals enter the United States and go into custody of border patrol agents, who cannot release them to detention facilities since they are minors. While no official announcement has yet been made by the Administration, Fort Sill could begin receiving hundreds of illegal juvenile unaccompanied minors as early as June 10th.

Using Fort Sill and other military bases to house illegal immigrants is simply an inappropriate use of military facilities. Moreover, I am concerned that what begins as an emergency measure could, over time, evolve into a permanent juvenile detention center for those who have entered the country illegally. This could result in a confusion of missions at what is the one of America’s premier military installations.

At least some recognize the problem.
